watching our way to happiness...

On day three of our World Happiness week, we explore our top watches and how they make us feel when we watch them.

Helen

Well, I'm 100% sure Andy will choose Kathryn Temple ‘On Knowing Happiness’ so here's my next 2 recommendations!

They have to be Benjamin Zander’s Ted Talk ’The Transformative Power of Classical Music’ and Maya Angelous 'Just do Right', as both have such incredible power to inspire positive action and connect with people at a deeply emotional level.

I remember playing 'Just do Right’ years ago at a conference with over 100 people and when the video stopped playing and the lights come up, there was a moment of profound silence and emotion, you could have heard a pin drop. It was a moment I will never forget and I have played it several times since, especially during our ‘Creating and Leading with Happiness' Workshops.

The impact of both these films on people is always so powerful, I think they all both a must watch for anyone wanting to make a positive impact on the world.

This is no brainer for me – On Knowing Happiness with Kath Temple. It literally changed my life and is the inspiration and motivation for setting up The Happy Learning Company with Helen.

Two simple questions – ‘Have you found joy in your life?’ and “Do you bring joy to others?’ was enough for us to question what we did, our purpose, and to start our amazing journey on the road to inspiring happy places all over the world.

But don’t take my word for it, watch the whole film film and get the most amazing insights into the importance and power of happiness. It may change your life too! (Listen to our interview with the incredible Kath in the latest of our ‘Happy People’ podcast series. She’s incredible!)

When it comes to discovering more about happiness, 'The happy secret to better work’ by Shawn Achor is well worth a watch! Using the power and influence of storytelling, Shawn shares his discoveries into the world of positive psychology and challenges the age-old belief that success leads to happiness. In fact, he argues that happiness makes us more successful - being happy means we’re more likely to get a get, are 31% more productive and more resilient! For a simple and compelling reason to create more happiness in your life, give this one a view.

I think we can all agree we've found a great level of comfort in Netflix over the last year, whether it was The Crown or Bridgerton, or even The Tiger King (remember that?) but for me it's watching a sport, football to be exactly. Having grown up with 4 brothers it was only a matter of time before I got hooked on the sport too, and one of my happy places is at Leyton Orient football club, watching them week in week out since the age of 7 come rain or shine, win, lose or draw. Having seen the real highs and lows of the football club over the last 20 years, it has shown me time and time again how togetherness and being strong as a team can drive a success culture, and as equally important - when things are tough on or off the pitch you work hard and improve for better days to come. And if nothing else - its an excuse to get out in the fresh air with my dad and brothers and spend some time with them!

‘After Life’ is a series I recently watched that really struck a chord with me. It really takes you through the motions – one minute you’re crying your eyes out, the next you’re doubling over with laughter! How does this relate to happiness? Well, it really summarises happiness in such a pure and thought-provoking way. There are so many quotes I could give from this series, but to list a couple…

· “Happiness is amazing. It’s so amazing it doesn’t matter if it’s yours or not.” – this one really gets me and perfectly summarises the power of happiness – it’s so amazing that even seeing others happy can have a positive impact on us. When we’re happy, we can be a shining light to others (and vice versa).

· “I think life is precious because you can't watch it again. Once you realise you're not gonna be around forever, that's what makes life so magical. One day you'll... eat your last meal, smell your last flower, hug your friend for the very last time. You might not know it's the last time. So that's why you should do everything you love with passion, you know?” – this one is really powerful. For me it’s the importance of being present and finding happiness and meaning in what may be even the most mundane of tasks. If I’ve learnt anything from the last year, it’s to find happiness in the here and now instead of always relying on future events and this quote sums that up perfectly.
